Internship
MIM students are required to complete an internship before graduating. Internships provide a means of training and orientation and are an important opportunity to connect with the job market.
An internship does not constitute an employment relationship as such, but nonetheless the procedures involved in undertaking an internship, established by law to protect both interns and companies, must be respected.
Internships always involve three actors:
- the host Company/Institution
- the intern
- the promoter (University of Trento)
Important: Internships should not overlap with courses. As a consequence, the best period to have the internship is after finishing the fourth semester or during the fourth semester. Internships between first and second year (i.e. during the summer break) are allowed provided that they are concluded before the start of the second year (around mid September).

FAQ - internships
When am I supposed to take the internship (period of the year /semester/first or second year)?
The best choice is in the second year, after finishing all courses and exams.
Should it be a part-time or a full time internship?
Part time or full time: it depends upon the agreement with the company. Preferred: full-time. In any case at least 20 hours per week.
How long should it last? (hours/days/months)
Usually 2-6 months. As a matter of fact, internships usually last more than three months. It is very difficult - and pretty useless - to find an internship for shorter periods.
Am I supposed to find the company by my own or will the University find it for me?
Both solutions are viable. The University supports you in the research of the appropriate internship by providing following opportunities:
- Meetings at the Department with partner companies during the Master Program
- Career Day yearly organized by the University
- Personal career counseling
- Online open offers published by the Job Guidance Office or International Mobility office
- Support in the writing of cover letters and CV for applying for an internship
Tip: show your motivation when you address companies on campus. You should be able to "sell" your skills and competences. Internship proposals by students are encouraged: in this case the Department will evaluate the viability of the project and the consistency with the Master's scopes.
Once I have been accepted by a company, what is the procedure of activation of the internship?
The Job Guidance Office/International Mobility Office (according to the type of internship you are going to undertake) will provide you with the necessary documentation according to the selected destination in order to activate the internship and to have it recognized at the end. The competent offices must be contacted in due time prior to departure in order to accomplish the required procedure. Failing in doing so may result in the impossibility for the internship to be recognized and credits to be awarded.
What am I supposed to do at the conclusion of my internship?
The Job Guidance Office/International Mobility Office will provide you with all documents and information needed for the conclusion of your internship.
Am I supposed to write a report and/or take an exam?
No final exam about the internship experience. A brief final report about the internship activity is needed in order to assign you the credits.
Am I supposed to write my thesis about the internship?
This is a good practice, provided that there is an agreement with the company to do so.
What is the link between internship and Master thesis?
The final thesis is often a dissertation in which you address a specific problem or issue arisen during the internship. Also, the internship may be the proper occasion to get reliable and useful data from the company. Furthermore, the company itself may be interested in exploring in more depth any issues with the intern and the result may be the thesis itself.
Are there any financing opportunities for the internship?
As a general rule, UniTrento doesn't provide scholarships for internships. However, there are some programs like Traineeship abroad which give some financial support for specific internships (with specific constraints).
In which language is carried out the internship?
Internships in Italy usually require very good command of the Italian language and good knowledge of English. Internships outside Italy usually require solid knowledge of English plus the country language. Generally speaking, knowledge of different foreign languages are highly valued by recruiters.
Are we supposed to take it in a multinational company or is it ok a small-medium company? Is it ok also an Institution or should it be a private company?
There are no specific rules for that. The internship is designed to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the Master. A solid internship project can be developed in any company. Small companies or even start ups have the advantage that interns usually are entrusted with many different tasks so they learn many different activities and have room for autonomous action. Big companies have the advantage that put interns in touch with a complex structure, and you learn to work in teams.
Internationalized companies are ok. Medium-size firms are accepted. Institutions are ok if they have a relevant role e.g. in the regulation of markets, or if they deal with economic affairs in general (e.g. OECD is ok).
