Visiting Student Researcher, October-December 2018
I was able to spend 3 months at the University of Calgary, where I went thanks to the call for thesis research. The University of Calgary can certainly boast an extremely dynamic and international educational environment, made up of helpful and attentive professors, who encouraged me in my research and included me in stimulating activities: conferences, literary festivals and collaborations with the Circolino (Italian Centre). The administrative, faculty and library staff accompanied and suppoerted me in every request, sometimes even anticipating any eventual needs. The Campus is also a very different experience from the way we are used to experiencing university. It is, in fact, a very informal space designed to provide students with a wide range of services, starting with housing, dining and sports facilities, study rooms open 24 hours a day, references for advising and counselling of all kinds, hosting theatres where dance and music performances are held, and cultural associations that organise leisure activities. Less than two hours' drive away are the Rocky Mountains, a scenic wonder where the natural parks of Banff and Jasper are a must-see. Although I believe that any experience abroad, which takes us out of the confines of our comfort zone, is a unique opportunity to test ourselves, in particular I believe the University of Calgary is an excellent destination and I consider myself lucky to have had this opportunity.

MacMaster University was very welcoming and organised right from the start. In the first days of January, an information meeting was organised in which we were given all the necessary information to have a positive experience, both academically but also from a personal/cultural point of of view. In this regard, I was very impressed by the words: "If you come home in four months with good grades, but have done nothing else, your experience will have been a failure." Many meetings were organised to meet other exchange students, even though the university itself offers a myriad of extracurricular activities! My professors were also very knowledgable and available for clarification at all times making the overall experience very positive!

It was definitely a tough experience at first: America is a counrty with cultural aspects and habits (both positive and negative) that often cause a lot of culture shock initially. However, the host university, fellow students from all over the world and the local people did nothing but to make me feel at home from start to finish! Even though it is difficult to build your everyday life in a foreign counrty, with a little bit of curiosity, everything will be fine.

In a word: growth. Primarily personal, because you have to leave your attachments behind, but becoming independent and being able to fend for yourself is priceless. It is a place where everyone can find their own way. The educational offer is wide and the many skills you can acquire are very important for getting into work. It is definitely a financial investment in our studies but it turns into a springboard for a career.

One of the best times of my life. I left terrified, afraid that I would live six months on the other side of the world, with no way out! Instead I met people I will take with me forever, as well as experiences, places, connections. There are things that mark you as a person, and this is certainly one of them. I would have so many photos to attach, but this one reminds me of the international students'day: everyone with their flag walking prodly around the city.

The practical approach and socretic method allow you to acquire skills that will prove to be an asset once you return home. The university is perfect for a full American college experience: the environment is multicultural, but personally I felt at home form day one. This experience allowed me to learn to understand other cultures without taking any point of view for granted; it was also an opportunity to develop introspection.

I went to Boulder, Colorado, for 5 months, making the most of the months granted by the ER+ICM mobility. I was very satisfied with both the academic (I worked on my thesis research project in one of the most internationally renowned laboratories on energy and nutrient recovery from wastewater). and the cultural experience I had the honour of living. Boulder is a town similar to Trento in size, quality of life (top in the United States), with university and cultural vocation. I had the opportunity to meet many ethnicities, languages, cultures, and make friends from all over the world. There were many opportunities to get to know the landscape and the beautiful natural parks of Colorado, the American culture and its history thanks to many active associations and the international student residence in which I stayed. It was a wonderful experience and one that will serve for both my Master's thesis and my CV.

The Erasmus+ ICM (International Credit Mobility) experience turned out to be one of the best "events" I have undertaken. The host university, The University of Colorado at Boulder was exceptional in every way. Indeed, apart from having a number of excellent community facilities and a wonderful Anglo-Saxon syle campus, the members of the department where I was staying were extremely welcoming and helpful towards me.

I strongly advise anyone who can to apply for international mobility scholarhip of any kind. Take full advantage of the opportunity to go and live anywhere in the world to enrich yourself scientifically, culturally, and personally. Also because student representation (a.y. 19/20) obtained approval in the CdF for the bonus point linked to international mobility

Virginia Tech is more than a university, it is a family. The campus is designed so that there is interaction between the students. The accomodations are close to where classes are held and in the middle there is a huge garden where events, concerts, sports and more are organized. I would never have believed that I could bond with so many people from all over the world. If I had the opportunity, I would go back to Virginia Tech now.

Virginia Tech is a magical place: everything in the university is designed to make students feel part of a big community, a big family. On campus there is everything, in class there is a very different experience from the Italian University that is absolutely worth living. The experience abroad is something I awlays recommend to everyone. At Virginia Tech you can enjoy an excellent study experience and many extra-curricular opportunities: clubs, sports, shows, events and theme nights, volunteering and memorial runs, there really is everything. Impossible to get bored, you just have to choose!

WashU Law is an incredible university in a very quaint Midwestern town. The educational opportunities offered by the LL.M. programme are unique: courses with American students, extracurricular activities at the courthouse, participation in competitions between American universities and, above all, the possibility of practising in the States by taking the Bar Exam. All of this accompanied by sorroundings and facilities that have nothing to envy to Hogwards Castle!
