Political, Legal and Social Implications

Period

From 30 January to 10 February 2023 with students present in Trento, PLUS a 3-hour follow up workshop online on Wed. 22 February (time to be confirmed).

Location

School of International Studies (SIS), Via Tomaso Gar 14, Trento

Contents

The Winter School deals with the legal and illegal circulation, detention and use of firearms both in Europe and at the global level, and related security and development challenges. Topics that will be discussed during the Winter School include:

  • transnational transfers and markets of small arms and light weapons;
  • the international and European legal framework applicable to the control of arms as well as States and corporate actors' obligations and responsibilities;
  • the role of the arms industry in national and European policymaking;
  • the nexus between weapons and the environment (i.e. the ecological footprint of arms);
  • the role of research and education in raising awareness on arms control among civil society.

The Winter School will be structured around lectures, seminars with practitioners, hands-on laboratories, and group activities.
Lectures will be taught by both SIS faculty members and external guests to ensure an interdisciplinary programme, a multiplicity of theoretical and methodological approaches, and a variety of case studies. Accordingly, the Winter School will adopt diversified teaching methods to ensure that every student is actively involved in the debates and the interactive parts of the classes.

The Winter School will also feature "creative happenings" which will value participatory and experiential learning methods (i.e. documentary screening, public outreach event), as well as meetings with relevant national and international NGOs.
The online follow-up will be a simulation exercise.

Workload and Credits

All lectures, seminars, laboratories, group activities and workshops will be taught in English.
There will be 7 hours per day of organized in person activities, including visits and excursions, and a post-Winter School online follow-up workshop lasting 3 hours
At the end of the whole programme, external participants will receive an official UniTrento transcript of records certifying 6 ECTS.
UniTrento participants will receive an Attendance Certificate and can enquire at the students' support desk if the extracurricular activity can be recognized in terms of credits or thesis points or extra credits, according to the rules of their study course.
