International opportunities for students

What is Tandem Language Learning?

Tandem Language Learning is a great opportunity to practice a foreign language in a relaxed and informal context. Here students from all over the world meet each other, communicate and learn not only the language, but also the culture.

Usually the Tandem partners meet each other in person and freely decide where to meet. Responding with caution, accuracy and flexibility to the challenges raised by the Covid-19 pandemic, during the 1st semester of the a.y. 2020/2021 the Tandem activities are planned as online exchanges.

When does it start?

It starts twice a year, in October and in February and lasts 3/4 months. You will have 20 hours of conversation to be concluded by the end of the semester.

Who can participate?

  • All current BA, MA, PhD students and staff of the University of Trento
  • Incoming exchange students of any mobility programme (Erasmus, Thesis Research, Bilateral Agreements, Double Degree etc.)

How do you apply?

Deadline for the 1st semester of the a.y. 2020/2021: from 24th August to 24th September 2020.

Italian Native Speakers

You will be asked to specify:

  • one or two languages you wish to practice
  • the time zone in which you will be studying or working during the 1st semester of the a.y. 2020/2021 (this information is needed to match you with a Tandem partner who will be located in a time zone similar to yours and to facilitate your time management)

Native Speakers of other languages

  • your mother tongue or the language that you can certificate at C1 or C2 level
  • the time zone in which you will be studying or working during the 1st semester of the a.y. 2020/2021 (this information is needed to match you with a Tandem partner who will be located in a time zone similar to yours and to facilitate your time management)

After the application deadline and upon completion of the matching procedure, you will receive a notification. This email will contain the necessary details on your Tandem partner in case you are paired. If no matching is available at that moment, we will place you on a waiting list and try to assign you a Tandem partner given the opportunity of late arrivals or rejects.

Who will be your Tandem partner?

A native or a proficient speaker (at least at C1 level) of the language that you applied for.

How does it work?

As soon as you know who your partner is, we will organize a meeting to give you some instructions and answer your questions.

There will be two types of meetings:

  • Pair meetings: the Tandem project is designed as 20 hours of mutual exchange. Together with your Tandem partner you will decide autonomously when to meet and which platform you adopt for your ongoing Tandem activity, e.g. Zoom, Skype, Meet, Teams, Whatsapp, etc. . We ask you to track your Tandem activities, the goals, the achievements, and topics of your conversations at the end of each meeting in an online diary.
  • Optional group meetings: we will create different entertaining online meetings including some intercultural activities and the opportunity to have an enjoyable exchange about the Tandem project. To get more info, follow our Facebook page

What do I get at the end of Tandem Language Learning?

On the condition that you have completed all the 20 hours and filled out your diary, you will receive the Open Digital Badge that certifies your successful accomplishment of Tandem project.

Furthermore, if you are a student of the Department of Humanities or an Erasmus student incoming of the Department of Humanities you can also get 1 CFU.
