Activities with students physically present in Rovereto will start on Monday morning 4 July and will finish on Friday afternoon 15 July 2022.

Location

Department of Psychology and Cognitive Science, Fedrigotti Building, Corso Bettini 31, Rovereto (both in the classroom and outdoors, depending on activities and the weather).

Programme

logo psyhuman labThe two-week programme combines lectures, workshops, and outdoor activities.
Lectures and workshops will be based on the principles and practices of participatory didactics: teachers in bio-medical, cultural, linguistic, literary, philosophical, psychological, and sociological studies will actively engage participants, who will, in turn, be encouraged to share their scientific and professional knowledge and competencies in the classroom, thus triggering a virtuous multidisciplinary learning process.
Narrative Medicine Labs: the signature educational practices of narrative medicine (e.g., close reading, attentive listening, creative writing) will characterise a series of group and individual works and debates.
Outdoor activities: one-day excursion (Arte Sella); half-day outdoor activities such as guided tour of Rovereto and Trento; and guided tour and meditative-aesthetic workshop at the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum of Rovereto and Trento (MART). A Video by one of the 2021 Edition's former students is available below, as well as the Photogallery (in the download Box).

Contents

The Summer School in Psychological Humanities and Narrative Medicine (PsyHuman) is based on the idea that narrative-based, subject-centred and culture-bound approaches of the humanities and arts can complement clinical psychology and bio-medical sciences, in order to comprehend illness and trauma, to promote health and well-being, and to build inclusive societies and affective communities.
By comprising psychological, medical, scientific but also literary, cultural, aesthetic and sociological studies, the PsyHuman summer school fosters an integrated model of health promotion and a conceptualisation of the experience of illness and trauma as at once evidence-based/objective/universal and personal/subjective/unique. It also aims at exploring the role of narrative-based and intersectional models oh healthcare in developing life skills that can be beneficial in times of strain (such as stress-coping capacity, resilience, and empathy).
Lectures and workshops will address the following issues:

  • the psychological humanities
  • narrative medicine & narrative-based approaches to health promotion
  • cross-disciplinary narratives of collective traumas and dehumanisation
  • illness and trauma in clinical psychology and in the arts/humanities
  • neuro-aesthetics and aesthetic meditation
  • mindfulness and contemplative practices for well-being
  • narrative empathy and interdisciplinary approaches to empathy
  • developing life skills for health and well-being promotion
  • building inclusive and affective communities.

Participants will enhance the following life skills: narrative competence, empathy, self-awareness, and interpersonal relationship skills.
