Sant'Anna School of Pisa

The Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies (Pisa, Tuscany) is a special statute university which operates in the field of applied sciences. The School’s aims are to promote the development of culture through scientific and technological research, to offer undergraduate, graduate and lifelong education, and to assure continuous interaction between research and education. The three key points of the School’s mission are excellence attained by the rigorous selection of students and of the teaching/research staff, an interdisciplinary as well as a cultural and methodological approach, and internationalization built up by connections with the best institutes and centres at a global level.

The city of Pisa is situated on the banks of the river Arno in the north-west of Tuscany. It is very popular with tourists because of its famous Leaning Tower but it is also just 80 km from Florence and 10 km from the Mediterranean sea. This vicinity to the sea has given it a mild temperate climate and being also protected by the mountains behind the town, Pisa has claimed a primary place in national and international tourism.
The town is the center attraction in the area astride the provinces of Lucca and Livorno and this region is particularly suited to farm-holidays, trekking, cycling, horse-riding, bird watching, golf, and open-air and water sports -  which can be practiced along the sandy-beached coastline equipped with bathing facilities, hotels and restaurants. In its main square, Piazza dei Miracoli,  Pisa continues to preserve a cultural patrimony for all humanity but it is also home to numerous masterpieces of civil and military architecture and of medieval history.

THE LAND

Tuscany

Tuscany is a region in Central Italy. It has a population of about 3.6 million inhabitants. The regional capital is Florence.
Tuscany is known for its beautiful landscapes, its rich artistic legacy and vast influence on high culture. Tuscany is widely regarded as the true birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and has been home to some of the most influential people in history, such as Petrarch, Dante, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo Galilei, Amerigo Vespucci and Puccini. Due to this, the region has several museums, most of which (such as the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace) are found in Florence, but others in towns and smaller villages. Tuscany has a unique culinary tradition, and is famous for its wines (most famous of which are Chianti, Morellino di Scansano and Brunello di Montalcino).

Six Tuscan localities have been designated World Heritage Sites: the historical center of Florence (1982), the historical center of Siena (1995), the square of the Cathedral of Pisa (1987), the historical center of San Gimignano (1990), the historical center of Pienza (1996) and the Val d'Orcia (2004). Furthermore, Tuscany has over 120 protected nature reserves. This makes Tuscany and its capital city Florence very popular tourist destinations, attracting millions of tourists every year. Florence itself receives an average of 10 million tourists a year by placing the city as one of the most visited in the world
Tuscany opens itself up to its visitors with the knowledge of still being today a beacon of civilisation. Here a trip has the unaltered charm of the Grand Tour. It is impossible to be insensitive to the natural symbiosis between landscape and culture, history, architecture and town planning.

Pisa

Pisa is a city in Tuscany. It is on the right bank of the mouth of the Arno River on the Ligurian Sea. Pisa is known worldwide for its Leaning Tower (the bell tower of the city's cathedral), the city of over 87,500 residents contains more than 20 other historic churches, several palaces, and various bridges across the Arno River.
The historical centre of Pisa is roughly in the shape of a quadrilateral surrounded by 12th-century walls, with sides measuring one and a half kilometres. The River Arno crosses the city from east to west, cutting it into two parts named Tramontana (North) and Mezzogiorno (South).
Situated on the southern edge of the city centre is Pisa central station (Pisa Centrale), a major junction in the Italian railway system. Pisa’s Galileo Galilei International Airport, located one and a half kilometres further south, has a railway terminal of its own (Pisa Aeroporto) providing direct    access to Pisa Centrale and the rest of the regional and national network.

Historical information

In 1656 a Boarding School for the education of young women was built in Pisa. It was established by the Order of the Benedictine Nuns of the Sant’Anna Convent. Later it became the Sant’Anna Girls’ Boarding School, after the abolition of the religious orders by the grand duke Pietro Leopoldo I. Later it was named Sant’Anna Girls’ Boarding School under the tutelage of the Ministry of Education. In 1931 Benito Mussolini founded a College for Corporative Sciences in Pisa and one year later a National Medical College was founded in the town. In the 40’s it was a Medical-Law College run by the Scuola Normale Superiore and in 1951 Antonio Pacinotti created the School of Applied Sciences. In 1967 both of these colleges were merged together in the School of Advanced Studies. In 1987 the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna was created from the union of the School of Advanced Studies and the Sant’Anna Girls’ Boarding School.

STUDENT’S LIFE

Living in Pisa

The old city is easily reached from the airport and the central station by bus or taxi. Frequent bus connections are also available for other parts of the city, and in particular for the eastern outskirts, where the new administrative centre and the modern Cisanello Hospital are located.
The tourist area par excellence – the Field of Miracles, with the famous LeaningTower – is situated at the northwestern end of the old city. A few hundred metres north of the square is the shuttle park of the Via Pietrasantina, where all tourist buses coming to Pisa are required to stop. If you prefer, you can rent a bike and make a tour around the Lungarni.
Hotels and other accommodation facilities are mostly concentrated in the areas adjoining the central station and the Field of Miracles, even though excellent alternatives are available throughout the city.
There are lots of restaurants. Motorists can leave their cars at the free shuttle parks and reach the city centre on foot or by bus (shuttles C and E). Pay and display car parks are available close to the pedestrian area for those who are not fond of walking, or are simply in a hurry. Access to the limited traffic zone (ZTL) is controlled by cameras, and all infringers are identified and fined. Disabled persons can obtain a temporary ZTL permit by dialling the freephone number 800-086540.
If you want to study in Pisa, you can choose one of these universities: Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Scuola Normale Superiore or the University of Pisa.

As a great university city, Pisa is full of life. Its center is full of all sorts of meeting places: pubs, restaurants, pizzerias, bars, discos and live music bars. Along the Lungarni or in the adjacent streets of Piazza Garibaldi, you can immerse yourself in the Pisan dolce vita, stopping off for the classic aperitif and a chat in one of the many bars packed with students. One address not to be missed is the historic Caffé dell’Ussero, on Lungarno Pacinotti, which since 1794 has been the main meeting
place of students and academics in Pisa.
