Course objectives and learning outcomes

Data, information, and knowledge are increasingly recognized as a crucial asset in modern organizations. The course intends to bring the students a solid general understanding of data, information and knowledge management focusing on concepts, methods and tools that can be used to enable innovation and change management within the organizations. A particular focus will be proposed on service science, an interdisciplinary approach to the study, design, and implementation of services systems. Organizations are complex systems in which specific interdependencies of people and technologies take actions and provide value.
The course enable the student to deeply analyse from an organisational and managerial perspective Information and Knowledge management systems, Information system and data management, double side platforms, and some emerging technological phenomena such as crowdsourcing and gamification.

Entrance requirements

In order to easily follow the discussions in class, learn and achieve the expected results, students should know the basic notions of the following courses:

  • management and business strategies
  • organizational behavior

Teaching methods

The course will be organized partly in the classic format, with the teacher presenting the material in front of the class, and partly engaging students in active learning activities, such as discussion in class and group presentations.
Due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic and the implementation of public health measures to contain the virus, students participate in classes by enrolling in UniTrento on-line courses, Moodle.

Assessment criteria

The knowledge acquired by students are verified with the following criteria:
- the mastery of the content
- the correctness of the reasoning and the methodological approach adopted,
- the clarity and accuracy of the exposition,
- the correctness and the solidity/coherence of the arguments in support of the innovative ideas.

The maximum final grade for attending students is 30/30 and honors (lode). The praise is given by the teacher as a distinctive element of excellence of the work done.

Verification of learning is carried out on the basis of a final written exam (weight 60% on the final mark) and the preparation of a group consultancy or individual work (weight 40%). A weighted average is made between the two activities (if both are sufficient).

The final written exam is composed by closed or/and multiple choices questions. For the duration of the health emergency, the examination is carried out in modality written via Moodle with Respondus - lockdown browser e monitor.

The group or individual work is evaluated as a weighted average vote of the following activities:
- quality of the presentation of the work: in depth analysis of the innovative idea, models of analysis, critical approach and clarity of exposition
- quality of the report (to be delivered on the day of the exam): in depth analysis of the innovative idea, models and theories adopted, critical analysis, synthesis ability and clarity of presentation.
For the duration of the health emergency, the examination is carried out in modality oral via teleconference.

Students are advised to have a sufficient internet connection for the correct performance of the test. Interruption of the signal for several minutes may result in the student's test being canceled.

The verification procedures for attending and non-attending students are carried out in compliance with the rules of conduct and the Code of Ethics of the University of Trento; rules and principles that the student, by participating in the assessment tests, declares to know and accept.

Study materials

The study material consists of a series of scientific articles in English that present both theoretical foundations and the latest innovative research related to the topics covered in the classroom. The educational material, especially for its innovative part, changes from year to year. All the material is available on Moodle course.
